Description

DAWSON DAWSON-WATSON (British/American, 1864-1939)
Fall Landscape, 1914
Oil on canvas
24 x 18 inches (61.0 x 45.7 cm)
Signed and dated lower right: Dawson-Watson / 14

Born in London, Dawson-Watson studied in England and Paris, then lived in Giverny, France, from 1884 to 1890. Dawson-Watson came to the United States in 1893, painted in New England until 1897, then began teaching at Hartford, Connecticut. He also taught in Woodstock, New York, and Saint Louis, Missouri.

Dawson-Watson began living part-time at San Antonio in 1914 before moving there permanently in 1926. He started exhibiting as a Texas artist-from Houston-in the Fort Worth annual in 1917. Dawson-Watson received the Texas Wildflower Competition's $5,000 national prize in 1927, but his 1928 entry in the exhibition, Flowers of Silk, was hors de concours (ineligible for competition because he had won the previous year). Fall Landscape may be a Texas scene, but was more likely painted in Missouri. It is an excellent example of Dawson-Watson's form of Impressionism, which leaned heavily toward Tonalism practiced in New England.
