The black fossilized plate, covered in contrasting white fern leaves, come from ancient tree-like plants that reached heights of up to 150 feet tall. This light color comes from a coating of the mineral pyrophyllite, unique to the St. Claire area. Due to the fragile and flakey nature of this material, large specimens like this one, at nearly 16 by 11 inches (41 x 28 cm), are difficult to extract.
