Barbara Maples was born in Temple, Texas, in 1912. Maples graduated with her M.F.A. from Columbia University in 1939 and had a long and prosperous career in teaching in the Dallas school system for about 27 years, then as the head of the Department of Art Education at Southern Methodist University for another 13 years. Most recognized as a printmaker, Maples joined the Printmakers Guild (renamed Texas Printmakers in 1952) in Dallas and served as its president from 1945 - 1946 and as the treasurer for an additional ten years. Maples' work is part of the permanent collections of the Dallas Museum of Art, the El Paso Museum of Art, and the Amon Carter Museum of American Art, Dallas.
