Plein-air painter Stefan Pastuhov is an avid outdoorsman who loves the beauty of changing light and seasons. His office is the great outdoors. It is no surprise that Lands End has selected Pastuhov to paint covers for their mail order catalogs. Painting in the style of the California Impressionists, particularly Edgar Payne, his technique is alla prima, that is, with the first stroke. His brushwork is spontaneous, not labored or planned. Pastuhov often writes a few sentences about the creation of each painting on the back of the canvas. The following is inscribed by the artist on the reverse:
There were flowers everywhere, and birds of every description. I felt I was in the Texas part of heaven.
