An Elkington & Co. Victorian Figural Enameled Silver-Plated Centerpiece, Birmingham, England, circa 1864
Designed by Albert Wilms

Elkington's electroplated creations can mirror the best sterling silver of the day, which is the case here. This example, designed by Albert Wilms, head of Elkington's design studio 1855-1899, features three figures representing the Olympian goddesses Demetra, Athena, and Cybele standing in an elaborate Pompeian-inspired enameled stand. The presence of enamel work on sterling work is rare, and on electroplated wares, even more so. In 1862, Elkington presented a service in this pattern at the world's fair in London, earning Wilms a medal for artistic merit.
