Very Large Malachite Sphere
Katanga Copper Crescent, Katanga, Democratic Republic of Congo

This sizable sphere has been fashioned from a singular piece of Malachite that exhibits the finely grained "flower" pattern indicative of the stalactitic origin of the material. There are swirling bands of various shades of green: from a light fern green to a darker forest green and all the hues in between. The hollow zones in the original formation have been filled in order to facilitate the fashioning of the sphere. It is extremely rare to get material large enough to fashion a Malachite sphere of this size. Making stone spheres is a very labor intensive and tedious process. It requires skill as well as physical strength, especially when making very large spheres such as this. This decorative objet d'art is in excellent condition.
