Frantisek Drtikol stopped using live models for his photographs around 1930, preferring to create tableaux of arranged cut-out or carved nude figures instead. Some of these pictures were designed to represent principles of Buddhism, a religion that Drtikol studied seriously. The fan-shaped arrangement of this figure may refer to Taoist symbolism, in which the fan is one of the Eight Precious Things. (The J. P. Getty Museum)
