Titled and dated in ink, with the photographer's stamp on verso.
With certificate of authenticity signed by the editor of The Christian Science Monitor, Mark Sappenfield.
Converse's photographs began appearing in the Christian Science Monitor during World War II while he was serving as a combat photographer in the southwest Pacific with the US Navy. He joined the Monitor's staff the day he left the Navy and spent the next 40 years traveling across the U.S. and to over 120 countries on assignment. He would become the newspaper's chief photographer and photo editor.
Converse was a pioneer in the use of 35mm cameras and natural light for newspaper photography. Among the more than 50 awards he received, he was named Newspaper-Magazine Photographer of the Year in 1959 by the National Press Photographers Association, and twice received the Brotherhood Award of the National Conference of Christians and Jews as well as numerous awards from the Boston Press Photographers Association.
