Description

Fulgurite

Fulgurite
Sahara Desert
Egypt

Commonly referred to as "fossilized lightning" in homage to the Latin root of its name, Fulgurites occur as the result of lightning striking the ground creating tube-like structures such as this representation of the material once part of a larger example. Such "mineraloids" are glasses formed by the fusion of silica from a lightning strike. The shape of a Fulgurite often resembles the path of a lightning bolt on impact as it moves into the ground. Given the extreme rarity of the phenomenon, any Fulgurite - especially any superlative example - is something to be prized and coveted. This specimen, presented on a black metal custom base, measures a sizable 10 inches (25 cm) from end to end. The stand positions the "pipe" in an upward and angular orientation, resulting in a quite captivating display piece. This hollow representation is highly textural with a rugged, bark-like exterior of a mottled dull gray hue and orangey clay coloration. This extended log form looks more like some kind of ancient artifact or work of art than a remnant of an incredibly powerful lighting strike. This mounted item provides a unique chronicle of an impactful event.
Overall Measurements: 11.02 x 6.69 x 2.95 inches (28.00 x 17.00 x 7.50 cm)
