This massive example of Libyan Desert Glass is not only phenomenal for its relatively huge size but has a wonderful combination of a vitreous surface and an intense coloration. The primary face of the example approaching 3 pounds (1.3 kilograms) in weight is quite glassy with a bubbly texture and slick feel. On its reverse, the piece displays a rough and striated "skin" with columnar grooves, including a deep channel, characterizing the uneven natural surface. The huge piece of Great Sand Sea Glass is an impactite, which was formed as the result of a meteoric event. The vibrant greenish coloration makes the specimen stand out from more typical, yellowish examples. This is simply one large, beautiful and translucent LDG piece.
