Description
Chelyabinsk MeteoriteChondrite, LL5
Chelyabinskaya oblast', Russia - (4° 49'N, 61° 7'E)
Witnessed Fall: February 15, 2013; 3:22 UT
From the most widely witnessed fall in human history, this piece of the Chelyabinsk Meteorite that exploded over Russia in 2013, to the amazement and shock of many people, weighs 207 grams. With considerable dark burned fusion crust, this specimen also reveals a lot of its interior with a complex composition and a highly granular nature. Classified as a Chondrite, LL5, the material is popular with collectors and does not often occur in such attractive specimens as this dual offering with both nice fusion crust and exposed core. With impact melt and shock veins, this rugged and textural example displays incredibly well. Much of the meteorite landed in a frozen lake, so recovery was challenging.
Measurements: 2.83 x 2.04 x 1.66 inches (7.20 x 5.19 x 4.21 cm), weighs 207.2 grams
