Description

Quartz with Hematite
Minas Gerais, Brazil

"A high domed cabochon of transparent light colored smoky quartz with a flat window cut on one side showing a thin hexagonal black crystal of hematite about a cm in diameter growing up into the quartz. Selected from a ~50 kg lot of polished quartz with inclusions in Curvelo, Brazil. One would think that the specimen is from the sand stone area in Minas Gerais rather than the pegmatite area."
- Rock H. Currier

Calling this a "cabochon" is kind of like calling a silver dollar "money." Both are technically true but also misleading in the larger sense. Yes, this thing is polished into a high-domed shape, but the back is not polished at all. Yes, you might be able to wear it; somehow, but not comfortably. It is probably more accurate to call it a small sculpture, showcasing the thin Hematite hexagon buried within the lightly smoked Quartz. As a side note, the addition of a 'window' goes a long way in making the Hematite visible. It is nicely polished and the naturally etched face has been left to provide an interesting contrasting base for this sculpture.
