Description

Crystalline Gold - 20.67 Grams (0.66 Troy Ounces)
Farncomb Hill, Breckenridge District
Summit Co.
Colorado, USA

The crystal and leafy Native Gold specimens from the Breckenridge District of Colorado are justly famous both for their 'perfection' and their place in the early history of Colorado. The tremendous growth and settlement of the state would not have been possible without the economic incentives provided by Gold and Silver during the pioneer period. During that time, high-grade leaf and crystal Native Gold specimens served to supply the Denver Mint - and other necessary enterprises. This is one reminder of those early times and displays crystalline "leaves" of Gold, accompanied by a dark reddish-brown mineral of indeterminate composition, which are the only traces of the surrounding matrix hosting this compact mass of foil-like bladed crystals. The hue of the Gold indicates a small percentage of Silver being incorporated in the specimen - not unusual for Breckenridge specimens. The Farncomb Hill section of the area was famous for the richness of the 'ore' that was mined there during those times, and this is a highly collectible testament to just how rich those ores could be in specimen form. Only minor damage is visible where tiny flakes of the Gold have come off the piece.
Measurements: 2.06 x 1.85 x 0.28 inches (5.22 x 4.70 x 0.71 cm), weighs 20.67 grams (0.66 oz t)

Provenance: Ex. Hoppel Collection
