Description
Dhofar 280 Lunar Meteorite Slab - 96.3 GramsLunar (anorthositic)
Zufar, Oman - (19° 19' 36"N, 54° 47' 0"E)
Found: April 21, 2001
The very exotic-sounding meteorite Dhofar 280 is a fragmental breccia and does represent a lunar anorthositic example. The piece of the Moon chronicles a complex impact history associated with thermal resetting and multiple impact events. Weighing 96.3 grams and resembling a hockey puck of sorts, the thick disk that was found in Oman in 2021 can be considered a rarity, at least on Earth, as it is primarily comprised of Plagioclase Feldspar, which is uncommon here but not on the Moon or other planets. The cut display face of this offering is a characteristic charcoal black color with a number of different-sized clasts of white and gray hues. The "center slice" aspect of this meteorite makes it a quite ideal opportunity to own a specimen of Earth's only natural satellite.
Measurements: 2.22 x 2.04 x 0.74 inches (5.63 x 5.17 x 1.87 cm), weighs 96.3 grams
Provenance: Private Pacific Northwest Collection #04-10, Ex. Edwin Thompson
