Description

Ash Creek Meteorite Diorama
Chondrite, L6
Texas, USA - (31° 48' 18"N, 97° 0' 36"W)
Witnessed Fall: February 15, 2009; 11:00 AM CST (UT-6)

This extraordinary and singular meteorite re-creation of the Ash Creek fall site represents a successful meteorite hunt that Geoff Notkin made to the location. Ash Creek was a witnessed event on February 15, 2009, in Central Texas. In addition to finding "perfect" fusion-crusted stones immediately after that fall, Notkin also collected soil and other materials from the precise find site in a cotton field and then made this one-of-a-kind diorama for a museum exhibit designed and curated called "They Came from Outer Space" which was originally exhibited at the Challenger Space Center. This is the complete diorama as created by Notkin, with cotton, rocks, sticks, dirt, and other items from the fall site as he discovered it. Presented in a custom display tray, the unique re-creation is documented in Notkin's book How to Find Treasure from Space, a copy of which comes with this model. The Ash Creek Meteorite samples in this grouping are dark brown and fusion-crusted. This is a most intriguing, unusual meteorite presentation. The quintet of "in situ" specimens includes a desirable oriented specimen and a total weight of 48.11 grams.
Overall Measurements: 21.85 x 21.65 x 1.18 inches (55.50 x 55.00 x 3.00 cm), weighs 48.11 grams total

Provenance: The Geoff Notkin Collection
