Description
Gold Basin Meteorites with Professor Jim Kriegh's Original Strewnfield MapChondrite, L4
Mohave County, Arizona, USA - (35° 52' 30"N, 114° 14' 0"W)
Found: November 24, 1995
This combination offering consists of both a trio of Gold Basin Meteorites as well as a Jim Kriegh map of Gold Basin. Legend Jim Kriegh was a professor and engineer as well as a friend and neighbor of Geoff Notkin, which resulted in this unique group being available. Kriegh first discovered the Gold Basin strewnfield in 1995 but kept it secret for two years while he extensively hunted and mapped it in great detail. He shared all his dates with meteorite scientists at the University of Arizona and donated many pieces for study. Based on Kriegh's painstaking work, Gold Basin is regarded as one of the best-mapped strewnfields, and it was one of the first times such a comprehensive and important project was performed by a non-academic. This Lot contains one of Kriegh's original Gold Basin maps used on the Meteorite Men episode and shows precise find locations and weights written by hand. Also included is a trio of Kriegh's personal Gold Basin finds: one large partial stone, one polished end cut, and one partial stone in a specimen bag, loaned out to the University of Arizona for study with UA number 782. "D. Hill" is written on an orange sticker label to identify it for Dolores Hill who was a meteorite scientist there making it a unique and historical artifact. The three meteorites were found by Kriegh, not on Meteorite Men, and have excellent granitic features.
Measurements: 3.29 x 2.80 x 0.89 inches (8.36 x 7.11 x 2.27 cm), weighs 258 grams total
Provenance: Ex. Professor Jim Kriegh, Ex. University of Arizona # UA 782, The Geoff Notkin Collection
