Description
Wabar Impactite with Iron Meteorite FragmentIron, IIIAB
Ash Sharqiyah, Saudi Arabia - (21° 29' 59"N, 50° 28' 20"E)
Found: 1863
This extraordinary, extremely rare, and unusual larger piece of the Wabar Crater impactite weighs a substantial 920 grams. Suspended within the cooled melt and light charcoal-colored mass populated with numerous gray-white inclusions is an actual piece of the impactor. Geoff Notkin is an extremely avid collector of impactites, having visited many craters, and has stated this is the ONLY example like this he has ever seen, making it a truly unique and one-of-a-kind documented meteorite and impact. The large body measuring nearly 10 inches (25 cm) across, is solid but relatively lightweight with very lava-like physical characteristics. The "sand impact" represents the only such crater of significant size. The field in the "empty quarter" of Saudi Arabia is one of the most elusive and mysterious impact sites on Earth. Pieces of the crater-forming meteorite are exceedingly rare, and this extremely uncommon as well as quite large sample came from the collection of the son of an oil company geologist who worked in the "empty quarter" and personally collected the piece in 1951. Wabar material is rarely seen for sale.
Measurements: 9.65 x 5.71 x 3.31 inches (24.50 x 14.50 x 8.40 cm), weighs 921.3 grams
Provenance: The Geoff Notkin Collection
