Description

Okenite Vug
Malad Quarry, Malad, Mumbai Suburban district, Maharashtra, India
10.0 x 7.4 x 6.3 cm (3.95 x 2.92 x 2.49 in)

With countless tiny, radiating crystals, which create the appearance of a fuzzy pom pom, Okenite is one of the more beguiling zeolitic minerals, particularly because of its tempting-to-pet appearance. The Okenite within this vug is perched beautifully within the walls of the cavity and maintains a pristine, spherical shape, due to the protection of the matrix around it. Greenish, near-colorless Prehnite and smaller, white spheres of what is possibly Gyrolite line the interior, outlining the soft, furry Okenite in a contrast of textures. A cool feature of this specimen, as well as a telling sign of its crystallization process, lies in the surrounding matrix, where one can find the white veins of calcium and silica-rich fluids that intruded the cavity, leading to the formation of this beautiful specimen. The condition of the Okenite is completely pristine: a rarity in a world where the best of the Okenites have already been discovered decades ago, and since then have been beaten and bruised save for a few choice specimens.
