Description
Fossil TortoiseStylemys nebrascensis
Oligocene
Scenic Member, White River Group
Pennington County, South Dakota, USA
This massive fossil tortoise hails from the famed White River Badlands known for exceptional specimens of numerous varieties, including Stylemys. The obvious size of this example sets it apart from a majority of other specimens, and this fossil shows excellent preservation of both the carapace and the plastron. The piece also has some nice color tones as opposed to the typical fully bleached examples out of that formation. There is some visible "wear and tear" on the preserved shell, but this specimen is in rather good condition overall with limited visible restoration. Measuring 15 inches (38 cm) in length, this is a significant tortoise in size, even for one from the Oligocene. This fossil has a pleasing tint of blue to it.
Overall Measurements: 14.96 x 12.99 x 7.48 inches (38.00 x 33.00 x 19.00 cm)
Provenance: The Property from an East Coast Collection
[Scale: 1 inch, with mark at 1 cm]
