The Third Man of the Double Helix: The Autobiography of Maurice Wilkins
Francis Crick
What Mad Pursuit: A Personal View of Scientific Discovery
While James Watson and Francis Crick are typically and jointly credited with the discovery of the "double helix" form of the DNA molecule, those with a deeper understanding of the history of the scientific revelation will also know that Maurice Wilkins played a vital role in what, ultimately, did win Watson & Crick the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1962. June Lindsey's role in this scientific marvel will be addressed in another offering during this sale, as she certainly deserves a tip of the hat here as well. This grouping consists of a trio of books, each signed by the various people referenced above who have written about subject matter related to the seminal achievement. In the Molecular Biology of the Gene, Dr. James D. Watson set a new standard for textbooks by providing a historical basis for molecular biology, including concise descriptions of fundamental chemical concepts as well as a discussion of standard techniques and model organisms commonly used with molecular biology studies. Effectively laying the foundation for what would ultimately be publication of The Double Helix, this book was instrumental in the process. This thick softcover paperback is well worn and stained attesting to significant usage. The Second Edition has the signature of James D. Watson in blue ink on the title page which is authenticated by a Beckett sticker on the bottom of the copyright page.
In What Mad Pursuit, Francis Crick offers his personal view of scientific discovery during the time stretching from 1953, when the DNA "double helix" was discovered, until about 1966, when the genetic code was cracked in this autobiographical memoir. The inscription reading "For Hal Best Wishes," followed by Crick's signature as "Francis" appears on the first page of the paperback in black ink. The book is in good condition other than a yellowing on the pages, primarily on the edge. The volume comes with a James Spence Authentication Letter of Authenticity certification number YY10348 confirming the renowned scientist's signature.
Lastly, a First Edition of The Third Man of the Double Helix by Maurice Wilkins is the autobiography of the lesser credited physicist who was also awarded the 1962 Nobel Prize along with Watson and Crick but never enjoyed the fame those two popular scientists achieved due to an association with the discovery of the DNA "double helix" that always seemed to elude him. The signature of Maurice Wilkins is written in blue ink on the first page and authenticated by a Beckett sticker which appears on the bottom of the next page. A colorful photographic dust jacket covers the hardback that is in very good condition, although all of the corners of the book are compressed and curve inward. The paper covering is worn at the edges.
