Description
Bi-Color FluoriteWeißeck area, Muhr, Tamsweg District, Salzburg, Austria
10.6 x 8.7 x 7.9 cm (4.18 x 3.42 x 3.10 in)
Weißeck, also anglicized as "Weisseck," is a high-altitude mountain range of Dolomite and limestone, with Fluorite treasures hidden underneath. It is a difficult locality to access, with only the Southern side of the mountain being scalable, but this hard work results in excellent examples of Fluorite that define the standard of the species for Austria, and European Fluorite in general. This specimen combines the two best-known hues of this material, deep purple and mint green, into a single beautifully etched crystal. The etching makes the entirety of the specimen highly complex in form, and the luster varies from satin on the purple side, to glassy on the green section. This is a great locality specimen, being unique not only for the relatively obscure origin, but also for its further unusual characteristics even in the context of the locality.
