Description

Gomphothere Tooth
Cuvieronius tropicus
Pliocene
Northern Florida, USA

With a rich black coloration, an incredibly solid form, and a most unique, rugged appearance, this example of proboscidean dentition represents the large molar from a Gomphothere or Cuvieronius tropicus more specifically. The variety of megafauna was related to modern elephants, and such teeth exhibit bunodont aspects, with the cusps being rounded rather than sharp. This adult tooth features some expected lifetime wear as several of the tips are worn down into visible "cavities" of sorts. This black beauty measures some 7 inches (18 cm) across, and the 'crown' cap is relatively complete from end to end, with the matte black hue visible over the entirety of the fossil. While rather rustic, this is one classic 'Gomph' tooth.
Measurements: 6.89 x 3.54 x 3.15 inches (17.50 x 9.00 x 8.00 cm)
