Description

Amazonite, Smoky Quartz, and Cleavelandite
Last Chance Pocket, Smoky Hawk claim, Crystal Peak, Teller County, Colorado, USA
10.6 x 10.3 x 6.7 cm (4.15 x 4.07 x 2.64 in)

The Smoky Hawk claim has grown in reputation for being an excellent source of semiprecious gemstone-quality Amazonite specimens. The color of the Amazonite in this specimen is a rich shade of teal-blue, a signature look for this locality. These sizable Amazonite crystals, the largest reaching approximately 3.6 centimeters, have grown out of a bright white Cleavelandite matrix. This white backdrop perfectly accents the vibrant teal of the Amazonite and rich black hue of the Smoky Quartz. The Cleavelandite on the surface of the matrix have very defined crystals that intertwine with the other minerals. This specimen comes specifically from the Last Chance Pocket of the Smoky Hawk claim, which was named this because the excellent-quality cavity was discovered quite literally on the very last day of the mining season by the Dorrises, after a dry spell of little mineralization to be found. The quality of this pocket cannot be overstated, and is considered to be one of the major pockets of the claims mining history. This specimen has seven repairs: three of which are present on the Amazonite and Smoky Quartz crystals. The remaining are in the matrix and on the bottom side of the specimen.
