Description

NWA 13227 Martian Meteorite Slice
Martian (shergottite)
Northwest Africa
Found: 2019

This large and complete slice of NWA 13227 represents a Martian meteorite, classified as a shergottite variety. The greenish hue of this example may confuse some since that color is not consistent with the general perception of Mars, but the reality is that the Red Planet is actually green on the inside, comprised in a large part of clinopyroxene and olivine. NWA 13227 was examined and studied by Dr. Anthony Irving of the University of Washington in Seattle, resulting in the classification as an olivine gabbroic shergottite. Confirmed by academia, this meteorite appears in the Meteoritical Bulletin and has been authenticated. Weighing 77.9 grams, this extraordinary slice representing a big piece of the Fourth Rock from the Sun is truly sublime with a two-tone green and gray coloration as well as a dendritic veining, adding additional contrast to the dull yet captivating smooth surface of the irregular thin slice. This is a relatively large and highly collectible example of a Martian meteorite with compelling visual aesthetics and characteristics.
Measurements: 5.15 x 3.27 x 0.13 inches (13.07 x 8.30 x 0.32 cm), weighs 77.9 grams

Provenance: The Geoff Notkin Collection
