Description
Diopside, Titanite, GraphiteMerelani Hills, Lelatema Mountains, Simanjiro District, Manyara Region, Tanzania
3.5 x 2.3 x 1.7 cm (1.36 x 0.94 x 0.67 in)
Diopside -not to be confused with Dioptase, another green mineral- is best represented as a species in the Merelani Hills, where crystals grow bright green and sharp. This example in particular has a beautifully crystallized termination, with many well-defined, reflective modifications, giving the termination a faceted quality. The color is a beautiful mint green. Cutting perpendicularly through this Diopside crystal is a dark, tabular crystal of Titanite, also heavily modified with a sharp square shape and beveled edges, and notably untwinned. On the other side of the Diopside crystal is a coating of microcrystalline Graphite, which has a glittery sparkle. This is a great example of what one looks for in a combination specimen: contrast of color, direction, and form. This specimen is displayable at all angles, depending on which mineral you want to emphasize.
