Basquiat, Jean-Michel: Famed street artist who rapidly gained attention in the 1980s with his primitive and graffiti-style art. Basquiat's imagery was influenced by commerce, theories of personal interaction, and super-hero imagery. With regard to this work, the partial transparency of the seemingly futuristic body presents multiple viewpoints and perspectives, allowing the viewer to look inside, and read the piece in many languages. Transparency of the human form, revealing skull and bones, is a staple of Basquiat work, as is futuristic super-hero imagery. Basquiat died of a drug overdose in 1988.
