Description
Fossil Woolly Rhinoceras SkullSubhyracodon occidentalis
Oligocene
Brule Formation
Converse County, Wyoming, USA
This partially complete and quite sizable skull once belonged to a Subhyracodon "running rhino" variety. This larger specimen exhibits nice bone preservation in the typical bleachy yellowish-white coloration of the overall skull which offers the associated mandible lower jaw section. Replete with robust teeth of an impressive brownish hue, this specimen is quite stout. One of the two canines at the end of the jaw is in place, and the entire fossil is displayed on a custom black metal stand. Unlike many such vertebrate and incomplete skulls, this example has not been subjected to extensive restoration. The more natural rustic state of the fossil is precisely what gives it such an ominous appearance and makes it such a nice display piece. Out of the famed Brule Formation of the Wyoming, this is a serious Oligocene Badlands specimen. This classic White River fossil exhibits minor restoration on both the snout and the zygomatic processes.
Skull Measurements: 14.17 x 10.63 x 3.94 inches (36.00 x 27.00 x 10.00 cm)
[Scale: 1 inch, with mark at 1 cm]
