Jacques Francois Carabain was one of the finest city view painters of the 19th century. Born and raised in Amsterdam, he trained at the Amsterdam academy and soon traveled widely throughout Holland, France, Italy, Germany and even Australia in search of subjects. He eventually settled in Belgium and became a citizen of that country those principal towns and cities he painted often and well. His most prized city paintings were and remain those of Venice, where he relished rendering reflections on the narrow canals with a vivid palette.

Original unlined canvas on original stretcher, probably the original ornate glit plaster frame; minor dent with no paint loss in upper left corner; minor frame accretion along extreme left edge; scattered craquelure and yellowed varnish commensurate with age; small, circular puncture (with piece still attached like a "hanging chad") in sky near center extreme top edge; tiny dent in sky near center of composition (between buildings); no evidence of in-painting under UV exam
