Description

Polished "Gem" Dinosaur Bone
Jurassic
Morrison Formation
Utah, USA

This partial dinosaur bone is quite substantial, weighing 15.5 kilograms (34 pounds). A sizable section of a femur from a massive sauropod, this "knuckle" end features a cut and polished window face that reveals the preserved trabecular structure of this once organic material. The mottled exterior surface wraps the marrow channel, which exhibits an oval black banding and a core of reddish-brown. A 'rough' side of the bone without the overlayer displays high-quality meaty reddish "gem" bone indicative of the interior of this impressive specimen. While an entire bone like this would be unduly long, heavy, and cumbersome, this modified version allows for appreciation without the burden. Dating to the Jurassic Period, this was found in the famous Morrison Formation of Utah, known for producing prolific sauropod material.
Measurements: 11.61 x 10.63 x 6.30 inches (29.50 x 27.00 x 16.00 cm)
