Description

Native Copper
Keweenaw Peninsula, Michigan, USA
9.7 x 6.8 x 6.3 cm (3.81 x 2.66 x 2.47 in)

As far as American mineralogy is concerned, the Keweenaw Peninsula is the Copper country of the new world, with mining activity that dates back far beyond the establishment of the famous mines, dating back to the indigenous trade routes of antiquity, where Copper became a commodity for both tools and art. This of course was due to the malleability of the metal, and versatility in its use. Thankfully, not all Copper is melted down for its more pragmatic properties: otherwise, we wouldn't have beautiful mineral specimens such as this! The entire display side is coated in good sized Copper crystals, many with distinct faces, and they all have a rich chocolate color that is accented with hints of bronze. The dynamic shape of the Copper and the elongated section of Calcite matrix makes this specimen easy to display at many angles, without the aid of a base.
