Description
Petrified Conifer Slab PairJiangjunmiao area
Qitai County, Junggar Basin
Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, China
From the Jiangjunmiao region of northwestern China, this pair of consecutive slabs represents a beautifully preserved silicified coniferous log. The surfaces are alive with color, displaying a natural palette of red, orange, tan, brown, white, gray, and yellow, the result of mineral impurities-primarily Iron oxides and Manganese-introduced during fossilization. Recovered from a fluvial deposit within the lower section of the Upper Jurassic Shishugou Group, these slabs come from a formation aptly named "Stone Tree Valley" for its abundance of petrified forests. The silicification process replaced the original organic structure with Quartz minerals, producing remarkable preservation and durability. The Jiangjunmiao locality has since been designated a Chinese National Park, and collecting is no longer permitted, making specimens of this type increasingly rare. A visually striking and scientifically important pair of petrified conifer sections, distinguished by exceptional color, preservation, and provenance.
Single Slab Measurements: 40.00 x 29.00 x 1.39 inches (101.60 x 73.66 x 3.54 cm)
Provenance: Property of a Distinguished Southern California Collector, Ex. Gerard L. Cafesjian Collection
