Description
Libyan Desert Glass - 1,297.1 GramsLibyan Desert Glass Area
Great Sand Sea
Western Desert, Egypt
This exceptional specimen of Libyan Desert Glass weighs 1,297.1 grams and represents one of the finest natural examples of this rare, high-silica tektite. Formed approximately 29 million years ago-most likely by a meteoritic airburst or high-energy impact event-Libyan Desert Glass is found only in a remote region of the Great Sand Sea along the Egypt-Libya border. Often mistaken for meteorites themselves, these translucent, greenish-yellow glassy bodies display distinct surface features such as scalloping and ablation-like markings, characteristic of high-temperature aerodynamic shaping. The present specimen is particularly noteworthy for its considerable size and thickness, qualities uncommon among surface-collected pieces, while still maintaining excellent transparency, especially along the finely curved edges. Highly prized by collectors and scholars alike, Libyan Desert Glass has even been discovered in ancient artifacts, most famously in a scarab carved for Tutankhamun's pectoral. This piece offers both scientific fascination and striking aesthetic presence-an extraordinary relic of Earth's extraterrestrial encounters.
Measurements: 5.91 x 4.01 x 3.24 inches (15.00 x 10.18 x 8.22 cm), weighs 1,297.1 grams
