Description

Canyon Diablo Meteorite
Iron, IAB-MG
Meteor Crater, Coconino County
Arizona, USA - (35° 3'N, 111° 2'W)
Found: 1891

In 2009, the Science Channel commissioned the filming of a big-budget trailer for the Meteorite Men television series. Shot in Nevada near Boulder Dam, it was called "The Crater Spot" and depicted Geoff Notkin blasting off across the desert on an ATV to discover a small crater, after which his costar Steve Arnold found a giant crater. Notkin, Arnold, and the crew dug the small prop crater by hand, after which an element of authenticity was added by Notkin, who scattered a bunch of real Canyon Diablo meteorites around the rim of the manmade crater. This represents the largest and last of those pieces, as all of the others have long since been sold to collectors. Weighing 700.5 grams, this genuine meteorite, although used as a prop, has an exceptional shape and texture with outstanding surface features as well as nice "mottled" coloration over the exterior of the heavy rock. This piece was also in Notkin's personal collection and comes with a Certificate of Authenticity.
Measurements: 4.60 x 2.41 x 1.30 inches (11.69 x 6.13 x 3.29 cm), weighs 700.5 grams

Provenance: The Geoff Notkin Collection
