PROVENANCE:
Previously from the Estate of Admiral Arleigh A. Burke, presented to him by President John F. Kennedy.
This present work appears in the winter 1982-83 issue of Sea History magazine in "Because I Want To" by Arleigh A. Burke. The work depicts the "Little Beaver" squadron on the night of the Battle of Cape St. George, November 25, 1943. The squadron was lead by Capt. Arleigh A. Burke, commander of Destroyer Squadron 23, between Cape St. George, New Ireland, and Buka Island during operations in the Solomons in 1943-44. In 1942, Anton Otto Fischer began serving in the U.S. Coast Guard Reserves assigned to produce illustrations of convoy and combat duty. Fischer agreed to serve as special artist to Life Magazine during this assignment and boarded the battle-tested cutter USCGC Campbell (WPG-32).
