This work depicts Tom Sawyer, Joe Harper, and Huckleberry Finn rafting to Jackson's Island for their "pirate crew" adventure in the Mark Twain classic The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. The moment marks a pivotal point of maturation in the story of the boy hero. This sense of receding childhood is profoundly felt in Falter's depiction.
