Description

A Superb Dayak Longhouse Panel
Borneo, Indonesia, First half of the 20th century

This panel from a Dayak chief's family longhouse is deeply carved, and painted all over in black and white. It features two animated mythological dragons (aso) facing one another, one turning its head around and looking in the opposite direction. The edges of the panels appear to be unfinished, since the intertwining curliques do not cover on both sides. Even so, the panel has a dynamic visual impact. In very good condition, appropriate for its age, mediums, and use as a panel placed outside the longhouse.

Provenance:
Property from the Collection of Dr. Richard and Jan Baum, Los Angeles, CA, purchased circa 1986
Michael Sorafine, Los Angeles, CA

Length: 14 feet 5 inches
