Description
A Tairona Gold Figural PendantColombia, c. 800-1400 AD
Finely cast gold alloy (tumbaga) with elements added by soldering. The standing figure is distinguished by a large semi-circular headdress with three circular dangles hanging from loops at top and sides. He wears a low cap with a wide visor extending well over the eyes (but leaving them visible) out to two stacked rods piercing the nose. Traditional symbols of power in the form of crescentic blades (called tumi) rise from the sides of the cap. The ear areas are highly detailed with the lobe areas ornamented with braided bands ending in a large coil and dot form. Additionally two loops extend out and support traditional Tairona dangling earrings/pendants -- it is extraordinary that these have survived intact. A large labret appears on the lower lip area. The body is adorned with a braided collar, armbands, and belt. The figure holds to its sides similarly braided bands looped into heart-shapes supported by a bar at back. In extraordinarily good condition, with the original, ancient delicate earrings and circular dangles intact. Two original coiled tubes at back of headdress for suspension, with a larger gold loop added in modern times.
