Description
A Bambara Antelope with Figure (chiwara)Mali, West Africa, 19th to early 20th century
Headdress figure of an antelope with very long horns and ears, a standing female figure straddling a second pair of horns on the animal's head. In the horizontal style; the body (standing on a rectangular platform), the neck, and the head each separately carved and attached with metal staples. A separately carved standing female figure is lashed to the top set of horns with twine around her ankles. Tufts of red threads line the ears, are in the nostrils, and through the front of the upper horns, and at the ears of the female figure. The female also has an aluminum nose ring and inset metal eyes, and she wears a black and white bead necklace and belt. In good condition, half of the proper right upper horn is missing, proper left ear cracked and a little loose.
