A Superb Chimu Textile
c. 900-1450 AD

From the Huacho river valley, North Coast Peru. Possibly a border to a tunic, woven of camelid fibers to depict seven figures wearing crested headdresses, holding scepters in each hand, and standing on an altar or throne. Each surrounded by a border of birds and fish in red and gold on a blue band as if in a doorway. An upper panel of thirteen figures similarly attired and wearing an abstract mask. A bottom panel of long-necked birds, possibly pelicans, with heads thrown back. In very good condition, sides selvedged, minor losses and a little raveling on edges. Mounted to linen on stretcher bars.
