Description

A Baule or Yaure Mask
Cote d'Ivoire, c. late 19th to early 20th century

Carved with elegant simplicity, this finely proportioned portrait mask --probably of a male-- exemplifies the refined aesthetic of central Côte d'Ivoire. The egg-shaped face is carefully smoothed, with delicately modeled planes and a serene, balanced expression. The plaited hair is finely incised into rectilinear segments. A minimal goatee-like beard at chin. White pigment highlights the eyes and mouth, creating a luminous contrast against the darker stain and patina on the wood. The restrained treatment of features-narrow slit eyes beneath arched brows, a slender nose, and softly shaped lips-underscores the emphasis on harmony and restraint characteristic of Yaure and Baule portrait masks. In very good condition, high pointes rubbed, proper right lower eyelid chipped. With a stand.

Portrait masks of this type were performed during funerary and commemorative dances, embodying the qualities of beauty, dignity, and moral composure associated with honored ancestors. Their refinement of line and polished surfaces exemplify ideals of calm self-possession. While distinctions between Yaure and Baule examples are subtle, both traditions valued such masks as mediators between the living and ancestral spirits.
