Description
A Remojadas Standing "Smiling Face" FigureGulf Coast, Mexico, c. 600 - 900 AD
Hollow ceramic a buff color with dark mineral deposits. A youthful male figure standing with long legs, rounded torso, and outstretched arms. The mold-made head bears the characteristic "smiling face" with open mouth, filed front teeth, and open, expressive eyes. He wears a large cap or headdress and minimal dress, the emphasis placed on gesture and expression. The combination of uplifted arms and radiant expression conveys a state of ecstasy, as though caught in dance, song, or ritual oration. In good condition, his proper left arm reattached at the shoulder and right leg at upper thigh, necklace pendant restored, the bottom of the apron on his belt deficient.
