Signed, inscribed and dated lower left: J. Plasschaert F. / 1741
Depicted in the painting are an engraving depicting the expulsion from paradise, Gaeette van Antwerpen, a document entitled den Ouderschreven, a small illustrated pamphlet, and a playing card. The artist was a specialist in trompe l'oeil still-life painting who was active in Bruges.
Condition Report*:
Original canvas and stretchers. Scratched into the stretcher is the name: R. G. Payne - [illegible]. Under UV examination there is only one spot of inpaint restoration in the leg of the Cupid bearing the flaming sword in the engraving depicted top center. Craquelure throughout commensurate with age. an approx. 1.75 horizontal tear with indent and tiny flakes of loss in upper left quadrant affecting lower right corner of playing card. Newer varnish.
