PROVENANCE:
June Miscoe, Gearhart, Oregon, by 1956;
Private collection, South Carolina, gift from the above.
Condition Report*:
Unlined canvas with Charles Roberson supplier's mark on the reverse. A second, spurious signature appears prominently on the rock at lower right, reading "E.J. Cobbett R.B.A." An approximately 1 x 3 inch patch applied to reverse of canvas at proper upper right. Repaired hole in upper left quadrant, corresponding with this patch, and infilled with unretouched filler agent. Yellowing to the varnish layer. Finely patterned craquelure, with one more pronounced line of horizontal cracking appearing on the seated woman's hat. Some areas of more pronounced pigment separation in the right side of the work and lower right quadrant. A few scattered small losses and surface scratches, apparently stabilized beneath the varnish layer. A very few scattered small dots of whiteish accretion. Not examined out of frame due to size.
Under UV: varnish fluoresces green unevenly. An older campaign of restoration to address craquelure appears below the varnish layer. Some additional, more recent dots and dashes of in the lower half of the work appear above the varnish layer.
