PROVENANCE:
The artist;
Galerie Goupil et Cie, Paris, by 1870;
M. Knoedler & Co., New York, acquired from the above, 1871.

Adolphe Jourdan enjoyed a successful career in Europe and the United States, focusing on a universally beloved theme within genre painting: motherhood. His sentimental domestic images resonated with collectors, who also appreciated his technical skill and sharp academic execution. Jourdan regularly repeated his most in-demand paintings to further expand his market, and the present work represents not only a repetition of a popular scene, but also a slight reduction, allowing for installation in a smaller space or a tight, salon-style gallery.
