Tibor Boromisza was one of the early proponents of modern European painting in Hungary. Early in his career (1903-7) he trained at the Free School at Nagybánya, a small Transylvanian town where an artist colony was established by a group of Hungarian painters who embraced the international trend toward naturalism, which meant slightly different things to different members of the group. In general, the trend was away from academic subject matter in favor of painting nature, people, and places drawn from everyday life. Like other members of the Nagybánya circle, Boromisza traveled to Munich and Paris to study, where he was profoundly influenced by the work of the Post-Impressionists and Fauves, notably Matisse, Braque and Derain. He developed a style that embraced the bright colors, flat planes and black outlines of French modernists and experimented extensively with a Neo-Impressionist technique.

Just as his career was taking off, Boromisza had a philosophical falling out with the older members of the Nagybánya circle in 1911. It was his artistic goal to use modernist tools to paint canvases that recorded his own country rather than looked like French or German imports. He traveled extensively producing portraits, landscapes, and cityscapes. After leaving Nagybánya in 1914, he moved to Szatmárnémedi (now Satu Mare, Romania) where he painted views of the towering cathedral there in this and several other works. In the present scene, his "pointillist" technique displays the strong diagonal application of dots in the sky to suggest the effect of driving snow. A museum has been established in Szentendre, Hungary, in the house where Boromisza lived and worked for the last seven years of his life.
