The two watercolors of a Turkish man and woman by Fauvel in the present sale were presumably made in Smyrna (modern day Izmir), where the artist died. He was following in the footsteps of the gifted watercolorist Liotard, who had enjoyed tremendous success producing portraits of the Dutch community there a century earlier.
