Charles Wysocki was born in Detroit in 1928 as a first-generation Polish-American. Having been raised in an immigrant community that took great pride and pleasure in celebrating the traditions of the new homeland, Wysocki created scenes that reflect the joyous festivities symbolic of American freedom. In the 1940s, Wysocki enlisted in the army and worked as a sign painter. After studying at The Art Center School of Design in Los Angeles in 1954, he began his career as a commercial artist. While developing his personal artistic style, he also designed iconic works for the annual "Americana Calendar" starting in 1971. This particular painting, Home Sweet Home, also known as Witches Brew, was featured as the month of October in the 1982 "The Americana Calendar."
