PROVENANCE:
Galerie Bärbel Grässlin, Frankfurt, Germany, 2007;
Acquired from above by present owner, 2008.
Franz West, an accomplished artist who achieved international acclaim for his work, explored furniture throughout his career as he created objects and sculpture that encourage the participation and intervention of the viewer. His furniture is frequently made of simple construction and ready materials, often industrial, and they are as reductive as his sculpture. Their simplicity of form belies the complexity of their meaning within his greater body of work, which can be found in the Museum of Modern Art, New York, the Tate, London, the Centre Pompidou, Paris, among other public collections. He was honored with the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the 2011 Venice Biennale.
