Description
Elbaite on QuartzSanta Rosa mine, Itambacuri, Minas Gerais, Brazil
15.2 x 12.8 x 9.9 (5.98 x 5.04 x 3.9 in)
There are mineral specimens with such incredible aesthetics and arrangement, that collectors often can't help but wonder at the chances that such a work of art could be formed naturally within the earth. This Elbaite on Quartz specimen from the Santa Rosa mine is one of these specimens: with the two beautifully terminated Elbaite crystals nestled in an aggregate of frosty sharp Quartz, the presentation of this piece is breathtaking. The largest of the Elbaite crystals reaches a stunning 14.5 centimeters long, and nearly 4 centimeters in diameter, making for a substantial example that is perfectly proportioned. The bottom end of the largest crystal, as well as the etched crystal on the back, shows a deep pink core, which was later overgrown by the deep olive-to-emerald green zone, giving these Elbaites the nickname "Watermelon Tourmaline." There is also a layer of chatoyancy underneath the surface-level luster, giving these crystals a unique dimensionality that is rarely seen outside of this type of Elbaite. The Quartz itself is also a key player in this combination, being virtually pristine, and featuring an interesting zone of Smoky inclusions around the edges of the crystals in the aggregate. This specimen comes out of an old collection, and was likely excavated in the 1960s. As expected of these large Brazilian tourmalines, this specimen does have a few restorations, but the largest termination is completely original. This piece also comes with a custom milled acrylic base.
