SIX PHOTOGRAPHS OF SIOUX AND CROW LIFE
c. 1898 - 1900
Six prints, each mounted on board.

1) Young Crow girl on parade horse in the quadrangle at Crow Agency, Montana. Photo by Fred E. Miller, c. 1898. The child is wedged in a high-pommel-and-cantle saddle with beaded stirrups. The horse is dressed with a beaded bridle that features a "keyhole" forehead pendant. A beaded horse collar and traditional saddle blanket complete the outfit.

2) "His First Lesson, Sioux." Brule Lakota boy posed with lariat and wearing beaded vest with design of American flags. Photo by Arthur E. McFatridge, Rosebud Reservation, S.D., c. 1899. For a biography of this little-known photographer, see: Dorothy McFatridge McBride,"Arthur E. McFatridge: Hoosier Schoolmaster Among the Sioux." Montana, the Magazine of Western History, 20 (4), 1970: 78-95. McFatridge taught school on the Rosebud reservation, 1898-1905; and later was Superintendent at the Winnebago Reservation, Nebraska; the Umatilla Reservation, Oregon; and the Blackfeet Reservation, Montana. For two terms he represented the district including Billings in the Montana State House of Representatives. He died on Christmas day, 1943.

3) Three Crow men and a White companion dressed in breech cloths for a sweatlodge ceremony. Photo by Fred E. Miller, Crow Reservation, Montana, c. 1898. The man second from right wears wire-frame snow goggles with tinted lenses. Usually the glass was colored dark green. The same man grasps a clump of horsetail rush, used for scouring the skin. His White companion holds a clump of sage for the same purpose. Tin pails for hauling water are seen in the foreground.

4) Brule Lakota Woman's Honoring Dance. Photo by Arthur E. McFatridge, c. 1898. The location is the Jordan Trading Store at Rosebud Agency, S.D. Two women at the right wear their husbands' eagle feather headdresses. Another carries her husband's warrior society lance. They are being honored for their kindnesses in providing food and refreshments to meetings of their husbands' warrior society. While these male members stand aside for them, the women will dance to a special song composed on their behalf for the occasion.

5) Crow mother and daughter. Photo by Fred E. Miller, Crow Reservation, Montana, c. 1900. The child wears a painted leather dress with beadwork at the hem.

6) Lone Bear, Oglala Lakota. Photo by Frank A. Rinehart, Omaha, Neb., 1898. A "4-Directions" quill-wrapped wheel decorated with hawk feathers is tied into Lone Bear's hair. He wears a beaded vest and holds a cluster of arrows. The tip of his bow is leaning in the left foreground.
